As members of a consumer culture, we are placed within a realm where our very wants, needs and desires are constructed for us and provided by the very system which shapes them. Modern consumerism has heavily impacted the sphere of beauty. Both men and women’s ideas and ideals of what is considered beautiful is constantly constructed by the thriving industry, where we as consumers are looking to attain this standard of beauty within our own projections of self. The industry without doubt is thriving due to this level of following, which I argue has developed into a form of religious following of devotees, of all ages and sexes. Is beauty completely a cultural construction based on falsity? From travelling to annual conventions worldwide that are dedicated to beauty and cosmetics, beauty ‘dos-and-don’ts’, which act as a parallel to the ten commandments within Christianity, holy grail beauty products and the infamous beauty gurus which dominate our social networking mediums within popular culture, such as Youtube channels and the ever-popular Instagram photo sharing app, the realm of beauty and its meanings have evolved into what I will demonstrate as a form of religion and has acquired a ‘cult’ following within its own sense. The industry functions on the generation of capital. Our healthcare industry works in conjunction with the industry of beauty and places importance on the need to constantly invest in and maintain health and appearence through costly procedures and weight loss methods. Here, we will firstly explore the sociological theory behind body perfection and the success of the beauty industry to dig deeper into how its religious aspects are formed. Secondly, we will analyze the power of social media and how it works as a tool for gaining devotees, shapes current knowledge of trends within modern popular culture and fuels the desire to attain an image of perfection. Thirdly, we will explore the many religious practices within the realm of beauty, including proper skin care rituals, hair care and the 'rules' which govern how one should properly conduct behaviour in their aim to maintain their beautiful image. Products which are deemed to be 'holy grail' items that are necessary to maintain one's beauty will be explored, also demonstrating how social media's influence heightens and impacts consumer and beauty culture. Additionally, much like within other forms of pop cultural groups, the industry's aspects of makeup convention and communal gathering will be explored to demonstrate how there exists a religious aspect of common believe and devotion that brings beautys together, strengthening desire and pride for one's passion. The realm of beauty pagents will lastly be explored to analyze how the crowning of queens and the competition to attain a reigning status title functions as a form of religious admiration and devotion. It is interesting especially to see how young women have come to idolize many beauty and fashion icons on social media who are actively giving their own opinions and advice regarding trends, popular makeup and fashion looks, and what they consider to be the best most valued products that they absolutely cannot live without.  I have chosen to research this topic because I myself am an avid follower and devotee of the beauty world, as well as follow many Youtube gurus and bloggers within popular media and I am quite interested in how it has developed into an ever-encompassing religion within itself, as well as how it works upon a sociological level.
